Karachi, July 2, 2025: Inspector General (IG) Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon chaired a high-level review meeting at the Central Police Office Karachi to assess the current status, performance, and expansion of surveillance camera installations under the Safe City and other ongoing security projects.
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders including the Chief of CPLC, Director General (DG) and Project Director (PD) of the Safe City Project, DIGs of Headquarters, Karachi Traffic Police, Sindh Highway Patrol, SSP Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC), and other senior officers.
During detailed briefings by DG Safe City, DIG Traffic Karachi, DIG Highway Patrol, and PD IT, it was revealed that 542 surveillance cameras have been installed across Karachi. These cameras are currently generating security alerts which have already contributed to actions against vehicles with fake number plates and stolen cars.
As part of the broader response plan, 12 emergency response vehicles and approximately 300 police personnel have been deployed alongside the camera network. The installation of more cameras and deployment of additional vehicles and officers is ongoing.

However, concerns were raised over delays in alert generation and dispatch times during the trial phase. The Safe City administration and NRTC representatives are working jointly to resolve these issues. Additionally, SSP AVLC highlighted the need to separate the data of recovered vehicles from stolen ones, as alerts are also being generated for already recovered cars.
The DIG Traffic Karachi informed that an e-challan system has been introduced to enhance traffic regulation and is being integrated into the Safe City framework. A proposal has also been sent to the Sindh Government seeking approval for increased fines and amendments to existing traffic laws.
IG Sindh reiterated the governments commitment to seeing the Safe City and other related security projects implemented without delay. Todays meeting reviews the implementation of decisions from the last session and current operational challenges, IG Memon stated. He directed that such review meetings be held weekly until completion of the first phase of the Safe City project.
To strengthen response capacity, the IG also instructed that motorbike teams be deployed along with emergency vehicles near surveillance camera points. He further announced the formation of a committee comprising officials from the Safe City Project, DIG IT, SSP AVLC, PD IT, and representatives from CPLC and NRTC to address issues related to alert timing and vehicle data accuracy.
