SECP Sets One- to Two-Day Timeline for Trading Account Opening at PSX

ISLAMABAD, August 28, 2026: The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has introduced a unified digital investor onboarding framework aimed at making entry into Pakistans capital market faster, simpler and more accessible.

The new framework seeks to reduce repetitive verification, simplify documentation and establish clear timelines for opening investor accounts, particularly benefiting first-time and digital investors.

Under the framework, Sehl/Sahulat Accounts will be processed within one working day, while Normal Accounts will be processed within two working days. Applicants will receive tracking IDs to monitor the progress of their applications. In case of deficiencies, investors will be informed within the prescribed timeframe, while any rejection will have to be communicated in writing along with the reasons.

The initiative forms part of SECPs broader efforts to increase retail participation in Pakistans capital market, particularly among young Pakistanis, and expand the countrys investor base to 2.5 million.

Our focus is to remove entry barriers and use technology to make the investor journey simpler, faster and more accessible. The objective is to unlock the significant untapped potential of Pakistans capital market by broadening participation, particularly among the youth, and building a deeper and more inclusive market, said SECP Chairman Dr. Kabir Ahmed Sidhu.

Issued through Circular No. 19 of 2026, the framework standardizes investor onboarding requirements across securities brokers, asset management companies, insurers and other regulated intermediaries. This is expected to create a more consistent experience for investors across Pakistans regulated financial sector.

A major feature of the framework is the elimination of repetitive customer verification. Where prescribed verification has already been completed by an eligible regulated financial institution or notified third party, financial intermediaries will be able to rely on that verification rather than requiring investors to undergo the same process again.

The framework also supports API-based straight-through processing and digital onboarding, including instant issuance of Unique Identification Numbers (UINs) and opening of Central Depository Company (CDC) sub-accounts. These measures are expected to reduce paperwork, manual intervention and processing delays.

The SECP said the unified approach is intended to modernize the investor onboarding process and encourage greater participation in the capital market by making account opening more convenient, transparent and technology-driven.
