Karachi: Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has issued a media alert to reassure consumers after receiving multiple complaints about a strong gas smell in different parts of the city. The company clarified that the odor is the result of ongoing testing during the commissioning of a new gas pipeline near Abul Hasan Isphahani Road and does not indicate a gas leak.
According to SSGC, the company has been testing its odorization plants since last night as part of the pipeline activation process. During the testing, a higher-than-normal quantity of odorantthe substance added to natural gas to make leaks detectablehas temporarily been introduced into the gas supply.
The company stated that this increased odorant level may cause consumers in some areas to notice a stronger gas smell than usual, leading to reports of suspected gas leaks.
SSGC emphasized that all system pressure levels remain normal and that no actual gas leakage has been reported. The unusual smell is solely due to the temporary increase in odorant concentration during the testing process.
The utility has advised its valued customers to remain calm and continue their normal daily activities, assuring them that the situation is under control and poses no safety concern.
