Karachi Bar Association Elections Postponed Again Amid Rigging Allegations

Karachi, May 7, 2026: The 2026 elections of the Karachi Bar Association were once again postponed on Thursday following serious allegations of pre-poll rigging and irregularities in the voting process.

According to media reports, Election Commissioner Abdul Sattar Advocate ordered the withdrawal of all ballot papers after concerns emerged that ballot papers could be taken outside polling stations. Reports further claimed that a significant number of ballot papers were allegedly found already marked, triggering unrest and anger among members of the legal fraternity.

For the conduct of the elections, a total of 33 polling stations had been established across courts in Karachis four districts under the supervision of the Sindh Bar Council. Abdul Sattar, a member of the Sindh Bar Council, had been assigned the responsibilities of Election Commissioner.

The elections, originally scheduled to take place on May 7, were suspended until further orders by the Sindh Bar Council amid escalating controversy surrounding the alleged manipulation of the electoral process. The Karachi Bar Association elections have reportedly faced repeated postponements over the past five months.

Lawyers and candidates strongly condemned the alleged irregularities, stating that the legal community would continue its struggle for transparent and democratic elections. Several members of the bar expressed concern that the events had damaged the credibility of elections within the legal fraternity and also raised questions regarding the transparency of Sindh Bar Council elections.

Amid the controversy, voices within the legal community called for the implementation of electronic voting systems to ensure transparency, fairness, and an accurate reflection of lawyers mandate in future elections. Lawyers also demanded an impartial and transparent inquiry into the alleged rigging and misconduct witnessed during the election process.

Representatives of the legal fraternity emphasized that the legal profession is founded upon principles of dignity, justice, and integrity, warning that democratic processes within bar institutions must not be undermined by unfair practices.

Several lawyers stated that any attempt to derail democracy within the Karachi Bar Association would not be accepted, reiterating demands for free, fair, and transparent elections instead of what they described as a pre-planned selection.
