Karachi Records 23% Drop in Fatal Road Accidents as IG Sindh Reviews E-Challan System

Karachi: Inspector General (IG) Sindh Javed Alam Odho chaired a high-level review meeting at the Central Police Office (CPO) Karachi to assess the performance of the city’s e-challan system, traffic management measures, and strategies for reducing road accidents.

The meeting was attended by senior police officials, including the DIG Headquarters, DIG Traffic Karachi, DIG IT, DIG Administration Karachi, DIG Finance, the Director General of the Safe City Authority, AIGs, and other officers.

During the meeting, DIG Traffic Karachi Pir Muhammad Shah presented a comprehensive briefing on the city’s traffic management, operational challenges, the performance of the e-challan system, and future plans.

According to the briefing, Karachi witnessed a significant improvement in road safety during the first half of 2026. Fatal traffic accidents declined from 477 cases during the first six months of 2025 to 369 cases in the corresponding period of 2026, marking a reduction of 108 incidents or 23 percent.

The briefing also highlighted a 46 percent decrease in heavy traffic-related fatal accidents compared to the same period last year. Authorities have identified accident-prone locations across the city to implement targeted interventions aimed at further reducing road fatalities.

Officials informed the meeting that more than 1.2 million e-challans had been issued over the past eight months. Of these, 55 percent were waived, 21 percent were paid by motorists, while 24 percent remain pending for various reasons.

More than Rs2 billion worth of e-challans were waived during the same period. The meeting was informed that a recommendation would be sent to the Chief Minister of Sindh to cancel e-challan tickets that were never delivered to vehicle owners. Under the proposed policy, only e-challans successfully received by citizens would remain payable.

The briefing further revealed that 44,000 vehicles have been blacklisted due to outstanding violations. Traffic authorities plan to engage car dealers to prevent the sale and purchase of blacklisted vehicles and ensure that all pending e-challans are cleared before ownership is transferred.

Speaking on the occasion, IG Sindh Javed Alam Odho praised the performance of the Karachi Traffic Police and the e-challan system, calling their efforts commendable.

He directed officials to identify high-risk roads and accident hotspots and adopt comprehensive strategies combining engineering improvements, strict enforcement, and public awareness campaigns. He also ordered the deployment of additional personnel and the installation of modern technology on critical road corridors.

The IG emphasized that reducing fatal traffic accidents remains the department’s top priority and stressed the need for establishing an independent Traffic Management Board to develop sustainable and long-term solutions for Karachi’s growing traffic challenges.
