Vehicle owners across Sindh have been given welcome news as the provincial authorities formally enforced amendments allowing citizens to become owners of vehicle registration number plates linked directly to their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC).
According to a spokesperson for the Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department, the change comes under the Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2024. The department has also issued an official notification following approval from the provincial leadership.
Under the new system, two fresh number plate series connected to CNIC registration have been launched. The initiative is designed to modernize vehicle documentation, improve traceability, and provide convenience to car owners.
The move has been endorsed by Mukesh Kumar Chawla, the provincial minister for excise, taxation and narcotics control, who ratified the implementation of the amended law.
Officials explained that a key benefit of the reform is portability: owners will now be allowed to transfer their previously registered number plate to another vehicle purchased in their name, eliminating the need to obtain a new registration number each time.
The department believes the CNIC-linked system will simplify administrative procedures while strengthening regulatory oversight.
