Karachi: On the directives of Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has initiated comprehensive fire safety inspections across Karachi to ensure the protection of lives and property.
According to SBCA officials, fire safety arrangements in 35 residential and commercial buildings across the city have already been inspected. During these inspections, teams are thoroughly examining the functionality of fire-fighting equipment and emergency response systems, said Director General SBCA, Muzamil Hussain Halepoto.
He stated that buildings found lacking adequate fire safety measures are being issued corrective notices. If fire-fighting equipment and mandatory safety measures are not installed within the stipulated time, such buildings will be sealed, the DG SBCA warned.
Muzamil Hussain Halepoto emphasized that SBCA is further strengthening safety measures to safeguard citizens lives and assets. He added that the inspection process related to fire safety and emergency preparedness will continue throughout the city.
The DG SBCA also disclosed that fire safety notices are being issued to 266 buildings identified in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) survey, along with other important structures. He recalled that in January 2024, KMC had already issued directives to builders, building owners and relevant unions to ensure compliance with fire safety standards.
Ensuring fire safety is a shared responsibility of builders, building owners and unions, DG SBCA stressed. He further stated that SBCA, as a regulatory authority, is working in close coordination with KMC and Civil Defence to enforce fire safety regulations across Karachi.
The initiative reflects the Sindh Governments continued efforts to enhance urban safety and prevent fire-related incidents in the metropolis.
