KARACHI, Aug 28: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the rehabilitation project of Memon Goth Road in District Malir, completed at a cost of more than Rs233.3 million, aimed at improving road infrastructure and connectivity in the area.
Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad, City Council members, elected representatives and other officials attended the inauguration ceremony.
Mayor Wahab said the Memon Goth Road rehabilitation project covers a total length of 8,529 running metres, with construction and rehabilitation work carried out on both sides of the road. The road width was expanded by an average of up to two metres, while shoulders measuring an average of 1.2 metres were also constructed on both sides.
Under the project, an asphaltic wearing course was laid over 35,437 square metres, while 80-mm-thick pavers were installed over 3,000 square metres. Another 17,000 square metres of shoulders were equipped with 60-mm-thick pavers.
To ensure smoother traffic movement and better road guidance, 150-mm-wide yellow and white lane markings were provided, along with cat eyes at required locations.
Addressing the ceremony, Mayor Karachi said all essential traffic, sewerage and base-related works had been completed before the road construction. He added that rehabilitation and construction work on several roads along Makran Road had already begun, while the tendering process for other roads was in progress.
He said development work across the Makran Road area would be completed by the end of the current year.
Highlighting the importance of Malir, Wahab said the district’s greenery, agricultural fields and rural culture represented a positive identity of Karachi. He said the administration’s objective was to connect different parts of the city and improve overall connectivity.
The Mayor said improvements in road infrastructure had reduced travel time between the city and Malir to around 15 to 20 minutes. He also said work was underway on a dual carriageway project connecting the airport to Check Post, which would provide connectivity to Kathore and the rear side of the airport with the motorway.
He announced that the Airport Backside Road project was expected to be completed and opened to the public by the middle of October, further facilitating citizens and improving traffic connectivity.
Speaking about heritage preservation, Mayor Wahab said a museum was being constructed at the approximately 500-year-old Chaukhandi Cemetery. He said he was in contact with the Provincial Minister for Culture and Tourism regarding the project.
According to the Mayor, Chaukhandi Cemetery falls under the control of the Provincial Minister for Culture and Tourism, while financial assistance had also been provided for establishing the museum.
He said the museum would help educate children and young people about the ancient history, civilization and culture of Karachi and Malir.
Wahab added that the Pakistan Peoples Party was also continuing work on historical and cultural projects across Karachi, while further development measures would be undertaken in District Malir in the coming period.
The Mayor stressed that the development of Karachi and Pakistan depended on mutual respect, unity, public service and practical measures aimed at improving the lives of citizens.
