Karachi ATM Theft Case Solved Within 24 Hours, Bank Operations Manager Arrested

KARACHI: The mystery surrounding the theft of Rs5.37 million (53 lakh 70 thousand) from an ATM of a private bank in Karachi has been solved, with police arresting the banks own operations manager and his alleged accomplice.

According to police, the banks operations manager turned out to be the mastermind behind the ATM cash theft. The suspects were arrested by Aram Bagh Police within just 24 hours of the incident.

Police said the main suspect allegedly entered the ATM booth wearing a burqa and mask in an attempt to conceal his identity. He also reportedly placed bubble gum over the CCTV camera installed inside the ATM booth to prevent the surveillance footage from capturing the crime.

However, the disguise, mask and attempt to obstruct the CCTV camera failed to protect the suspects from investigation. Police traced and arrested the suspects with the help of technical investigation, human intelligence and CCTV footage.

The arrests have raised concerns about internal security controls at banking facilities, particularly the possibility of employees exploiting their knowledge of ATM operations and security procedures.

Police said further investigation is underway to determine the complete circumstances of the theft and identify whether any other individuals were involved.

The incident highlights the importance of strong internal controls, CCTV monitoring and effective security measures at ATMs and banking facilities to prevent large-scale cash theft.
