World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Observed Globally to Highlight the Plight of Older Adults in Care Facilities

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was observed worldwide on Sunday, drawing attention to the often-overlooked issue of abuse faced by older adults, particularly in long-term care facilities. The Day serves as a call to action to protect elderly individuals, especially during emergencies such as natural disasters, pandemics, and armed conflicts.

This years theme, Addressing Abuse of Older Adults in Long-Term Care Facilities: Through Data and Action, emphasizes the importance of evidence-based strategies and proactive measures to combat elder abuse in institutional settings. Advocates around the world have used the occasion to shed light on this growing concern and to demand systemic reforms that prioritize the dignity, safety, and rights of older adults.

WEAAD was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011, following a proposal by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA). It is the one day each year when global voices unite to condemn the abuse and neglect suffered by the elderly.

Elder abuse is defined as a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. This can include physical, emotional, financial, and sexual abuse, as well as neglect.

Experts warn that elder abuse is not just a personal tragedy but a significant public health and human rights issue affecting millions globally. As populations age, ensuring the well-being of older persons has become a pressing concern for governments, healthcare providers, and communities alike.

WEAAD 2025 underscores the urgent need for comprehensive data collection, policy reform, caregiver training, and public awareness to ensure older adults live their later years with the dignity, security, and care they deserve.
