Karachi: Workers of Jamaat-e-Islami who were detained following a protest near the Sindh Assembly were produced on Sunday before a special magistrate in the City Courts Karachi, District South.
According to party representatives, the arrests came after police moved to disperse what they described as a peaceful demonstration. They alleged that force was used against unarmed participants and that several workers were taken into custody during the operation.
JI leadership strongly condemned the decision by the Government of Sindh to register terrorism-related provisions against the detained activists. Party officials termed the move excessive and unjustified, maintaining that their protest was non-violent and within democratic rights.
Lawyers representing the detainees argued before the magistrate that the charges were disproportionate and requested appropriate legal relief. Further proceedings in the case are expected in the coming days.
