KARACHI: 24 April 2025 The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has intensified its crackdown against tax evaders and has now registered a First Information Report (FIR) against internationally acclaimed fashion designer Nomi Ansari in a case involving Rs 1.25 billion sales tax fraud.

According to sources, the Corporate Tax Office Karachi, under the FBR, launched an inquiry after receiving credible information regarding alleged tax evasion by Nomi Ansari. Upon completing its preliminary investigation and gathering sufficient evidence, the department proceeded to initiate legal action.

Acting on search warrants obtained from a magistrate, officials conducted targeted raids at Nomi Ansari’s factory and key retail outlets located in Mehran Town, Korangi, and DHA areas of Karachi. During these operations, relevant records and documents were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

An official tax demand order has also been issued against the designer, affirming the seriousness of the charges. The FIR, now formally registered, accuses the renowned fashion designer of involvement in a substantial sales tax fraud amounting to Rs 1.25 billion.

FBR officials noted that the case is part of a broader national campaign to enforce tax laws and ensure compliance. The Corporate Tax Office Karachi has significantly accelerated its enforcement actions, and this case serves as a high-profile example of our commitment, said an FBR spokesperson.

Sources further revealed that Nomi Ansari, who is currently abroad, may face arrest upon his return to Pakistan. If detained, he will be presented before the Customs and Taxation Court for further legal proceedings.

It is worth mentioning that in February of this year, the Corporate Tax Office had already sealed Nomi Ansaris factory and several outlets in Karachi due to violations of sales tax regulations and Point of Sale (POS) system requirements.

FBR officials emphasised that such enforcement actions are being carried out nationwide in line with directives issued to field formations for curbing tax evasion and ensuring transparency in the retail sector.
