Karachi: Panic spread across Karachi on Sunday and into early Monday morning as multiple earthquake tremors were felt in various parts of the city, triggering fear among residents and forcing many to rush outdoors for safety.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Karachi experienced three distinct tremors within a span of just 30 minutes, with the strongest jolt recorded at approximately 1:28 PM. These tremors were felt in several areas, including Malir, Shah Faisal, Landhi, and Quaidabad.
Earlier in the day, a powerful earthquake struck around 1:15 AM, reportedly the strongest of the series. The epicenter of the quake was identified near Quaidabad, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The PMD confirmed that the magnitude of the earlier quake on Sunday evening reached 3.6 on the Richter scale.
Residents from areas such as Sherpao Colony, Malir, and Qadri Town described scenes of chaos and fear. Many people left their homes in the middle of the night, gathering in open spaces and chanting prayers such as Kalma Tayyiba in hopes of divine protection. In some neighborhoods, video footage captured trembling buildings and frightened citizens taking refuge outdoors.
Despite the intensity and frequency of the tremors, no reports of casualties or significant property damage have been reported so far. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging residents to remain calm but vigilant.
Emergency services and disaster management teams have been placed on alert, while geologists and seismologists assess whether this recent seismic activity may signal a larger geological shift or aftershocks.
Karachi, though not typically an earthquake-prone region compared to northern Pakistan, has seen an uptick in seismic activity in recent months. The PMD recommends that citizens review earthquake preparedness measures and avoid panic in case of further tremors.
Public Advisory: Stay away from unstable structures, avoid using elevators, and keep emergency kits accessible. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
May Allah protect us all.
