The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) held a heartfelt condolence meeting to honor the memory and extraordinary contributions of Prof. Kalimuddin Aziz, former Executive Director of NICVD. The event recognized his pivotal role in the advancement of cardiac care, particularly paediatric cardiology, in Pakistan.
The condolence gathering was attended by Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, along with former Executive Directors and senior faculty members of NICVD. In a touching tribute to Prof. Kalimuddin’s legacy, Dr. Pechuho announced that the Paediatric Ward at NICVD will be named in his honora testament to his lasting impact on the institution and on countless patients.
Prof. Kalimuddin Aziz, who joined NICVD in 1980 as the countrys first Paediatric Cardiologist, was a visionary leader who laid the foundation for paediatric cardiac services in Pakistan. His tenure as Executive Director (from January 19, 1992, to April 13, 1996) was marked by growth and innovation in cardiac care. He also served as the lifetime President of the Pakistan Society of Paediatric Cardiology, further cementing his role as a pioneer in the field.
During the ceremony, heartfelt recorded messages were shared by leading figures in cardiac medicine, including Prof. Azhar M.A. Faruqui (former Executive Director, NICVD), Prof. Shakeel Ahmed Qureshi (Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at Evelina, London), and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rehman (Chairman, RMI). Each speaker reflected on Prof. Kalimuddins unparalleled dedication, leadership, and the profound legacy he leaves behind.
NICVD expressed deep sorrow at the loss of a stalwart whose vision and service will continue to inspire generations of healthcare professionals. His contributions to paediatric cardiology and cardiac care in Pakistan will be remembered with enduring respect and gratitude.
