Karachi Mayor Seeks Federal Support for Mega Development Projects

Karachi, March 17, 2025 The Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has formally requested financial support from the Federal Government for a comprehensiveKarachi Development Packageaimed at revitalizing the citys infrastructure and economy.

In an official letter addressed to theGovernor of Sindh, the Mayor expressed gratitude for the Governors offer in securing PKR 100 billionfrom the Federal Government. The proposed projects include expressway connections, port rehabilitation, environmental sustainability initiatives, and urban regeneration plans.

Key Development Projects & Estimated Costs:

  1. Expressway from Shahrah-e-Bhutto to Port Qasim PKR 14 billion
  2. Rehabilitation of Northern Bypass to Karachi Port PKR 35 billion
  3. Drug Rehabilitation Facility at Gutter Baghicha PKR 2 billion
  4. New Administrative Block at Karachi Metropolitan University PKR 3 billion
  5. Expansion of Safari Park PKR 5 billion
  6. Development of Green Zone (200 acres at Gutter Baghicha) PKR 2 billion
  7. Coastal Regeneration Project PKR 5 billion
  8. Karachi Harbour Rehabilitation & Cleaning PKR 5 billion
  9. Abattoir & Meat Processing Zone at Northern Bypass PKR 3 billion
  10. Water Recycling Facility at Korangi Creek PKR 5 billion

Focus on Urban Regeneration & Traffic Solutions

Mayor Wahab emphasized the need forurban regeneration projectsin some of the city’s most deteriorated areas, includingPakistan Quarters, Jamshed Quarters, and Martin Quarters. He urged the Federal Government to intervene and collaborate with theKarachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC)to improve these regions.

Additionally, the Mayor proposed the construction ofparking plazas in congested areaslikeM.A. Jinnah Road and I.I. Chundrigar Roadto ease traffic congestion.

Call for Federal Government’s Support

The Mayor highlighted that while KMC and theGovernment of Sindhare actively working on development projects, Federal assistance is crucial for large-scale improvements. He stressed that these initiatives would not only benefit Karachi but alsoboost Pakistans economy and help combat climate challenges.

This request underscores the urgency ofsustainable urban developmentin Karachi, ensuring long-term economic growth, environmental sustainability, and improved public infrastructure.
