Despite being introduced as a modern public transport solution, the Karachi Red Bus service is facing growing criticism from daily commuters who highlight serious issues related to overcrowding, passenger safety, and rising fares.
Passengers have taken to social media and public forums to voice their frustration. One frequent commuter expressed their concern, stating, During rush hours, the buses are packed beyond capacity. The brakes are so hard that people are thrown forward and end up pressing against each other. Its extremely uncomfortable and unsafe.
The bus design has also come under scrutiny. According to commuters, the seating arrangement is poor, with many areas left as empty space that could have been used to add more seats. There are too few seats, and the handles are placed too high, making it difficult for many passengers to hold on, especially for women and shorter individuals, said another user.

Moreover, the mens section of the bus is reported to be so overcrowded that even closing the door becomes a challenge. Its completely packed, and in such situations, accidental physical contact becomes common, a regular traveler shared.
In addition to these safety and design concerns, fare hikes have made the service less accessible. Commuters pointed out that the fare has increased from Rs. 50 to Rs. 120, making it unaffordable for many, especially students. We have stopped using the bus because of the high cost. If I speak more, Ill have a lot to say, wrote one user in frustration.
Many have suggested that either more Red Buses should be deployed or the older bus routes should be revived. The previous routes were far more efficient, with buses arriving every five minutes and offering student discounts, said a former passenger.
Citizens are urging the Sindh government to take immediate action, regulate the fare system, and improve the service quality. Until then, what was meant to be a solution for Karachis public transport crisis is turning into a new source of distress for daily commuters.
