Karachi: In an effort to control the unnecessary use of line water in Karachi, particularly for car washing, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Council has approved a resolution to impose fines. The proposal, presented by Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, suggests a fine of Rs. 10,000 for using line water to wash vehicles on streets, in alleys, and at commercial centers.
According to the resolution, fines will be imposed based on complaints filed by Union Council (UC) Chairmen, and the collected amount will be reinvested within the same UC where the violation is reported.
PPP member Najmi Alam highlighted that in areas like Do Talwar, line water is being used to wash cars, and water from homes is flowing onto the streets, wasting valuable resources. He emphasized the urgent need for effective measures to prevent such misuse.
Opposition leader Saifuddin Advocate raised strong concerns, stating that while the city already faces a severe water shortage, the Mayor is focused on future plans. He questioned the escalating cost of the K-IV water project, which has increased from Rs. 20 billion to Rs. 200 billion, and criticized the ongoing dismantling of water pipelines under the guise of planning. He warned that protests will soon take place on the streets against this situation.
In response, Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced that the next KMC meeting will be dedicated solely to addressing the citys water crisis.
